The Citation Group, a leading international provider of compliance software and services for SMEs, has announced the acquisition of PayCaptain, the award-winning payroll software and managed services provider trusted by hundreds of UK employers.

Founded by Simon Bocca in 2020, PayCaptain is a payroll business distinguished by the quality of its service.
A near-doubling of year-on-year revenue and a 98% customer retention rate reflect an organisation that combines modern technology, in-house payroll expertise and focus on both customer and employee experience. Its flexible model gives employers the control of a contemporary, AI-enabled platform with smart automation, analytics, and reporting — without sacrificing the assurance of a fully managed service.

The acquisition adds payroll — the most universal of all compliance obligations — to Citation’s technology and advisory solutions that support SMEs across every aspect of workforce compliance and risk, including HR, Employment Law, Health & Safety, Workforce Management, ISO accreditation, Cybersecurity, eLearning and Employee Screening.

Over the coming months, PayCaptain’s capabilities will be progressively integrated into Citation’s HR and Workforce Management software, unifying payroll with the full compliance platform into a single end-to-end solution. Businesses can choose to use PayCaptain as a standalone software solution or with a flexible managed service, where CIPP-qualified experts remove the need for in-house payroll resource, giving business owners confidence that payroll is in safe hands. Combining award-winning software and human expertise, it will help UK businesses navigate an increasingly complex regulatory landscape with one trusted partner.

The PayCaptain platform includes an industry-leading employee app that enables workers to see their earnings accrue in real time, access emergency pay advances at no cost to employees, set up salary savings, and understand their pay in plain language. Embedded AI capabilities — including an in-app assistant, custom analytics, and intelligent reporting — reduce administrative burden for employers while actively supporting the financial wellbeing of their workforce. PayCaptain is the UK’s first B Corp certified payroll provider.

PayCaptain will operate as a dedicated Payroll Division within The Citation Group, with founder Simon Bocca remaining as Managing Director. Existing PayCaptain clients will see no change to their service, platform, or support.
